Hey Nicki, I just bought that CD believe it or not (my granddaughter wanted it, and I wanted to listen to it first...) Anyway, I had heard the song many times, and understood most of it until I heard the line "The s*it is bananas.....
B A N A N A S, and all I could do was laugh....so after replaying it over and over again, I came to the conclusion that the girl was tired of hearing things that were being said behind her back, and that she knew she was not your average, cheerleader type peer in school, who apparently she disliked...and they felt superior to her...I think she wanted these girls to know that if they had something to say about her, to say it to her face and that she was going to be who she was and would stand up to anyone who talked crap about her....when the banana lines came into play, I think she finally was saying, no matter who she was she was going to remain true to herself and after letting these girls know this she was taking control over the situation...so when she was saying that line, she was making them repeat after her, so she was the superior one after all and was letting them know it...by hollering back....does that make sense to you? It's the best I could come up with, and YES, I let my granddaughter have the CD....

The lyrics seem indicate that a 'hollaback girl' is someone who would rather engage in a physical fight instead of a verbal altercation. But Gwen gave a different perspective. I must have seen Gwen in the same MTV interview that Chelsea saw. She said a 'hollaback girl' is someone who centers her life around a guy - follows him around and does whatever HE wants. I got the impression that it's a chick who makes herself available for a booty call and doesn't have her own life.
