Legal equality regarding certain issues should be a priority over such a broad and divisive issue of same sex marriage.
If a law were proposed to allow a same sex partner to be treated as a family member regarding hospital visitation, the law would not be as widely opposed as same sex marriage.
If a law were proposed to allow a same sex partner to inherit a jointly owned home without having to pay an inheritance tax on their deceased partners share of the home (which already is the case for a married couple), the law would not be as widely opposed as same sex marriage.
If such laws are passed, there would be less opposition to same sex marriage since there would be less to oppose. With less to oppose, same sex marriage would be more of a reality than a struggle for certain rights and responsibilities.

Many states already grant gays/lesbians/bisexuals and Transgendered equal protection in housing, temporary accommodations and employment.
Granted, not all...and not nearly enough, but we are actually taking things one step at a time.
My state just enacted it's adding equal protections in these areas to the GLBT community just over a year ago. We had fought for nearly FORTY years to get this.
Now we're pushing for Civil Unions w/ Religious Freedom protections. Granted, I'm not on-board with this one as anything less than fully equal legal MARRIAGE is truly an insult to my intelligence and to me as a citizen and human being.

Well, I have been personally thinking a lot about this lately, and IMHO the ONLY way we will ever achieve equality is when marriage is legalized. We may be able to work at the rights you mentioned, but I think that the anti-gay movement will continue to try to erode those rights as long as marriage is not legal. Yes equality on some issues will be good, but without marriage equality, we will always be looked at as second class -- reasons to deny us the rights you mentioned.

DISCLAIMER: What I am about to say are my views and my views only, and I will accept any responsibility for them.
To me, it seems like the LGBT community is pushing for marriage because in our eyes it will make us equal to straight people, because we will get the same tax breaks and such. They don't get harangued for who they love, and are allowed to marry whoever they want. We will never be equal to them unless we are allowed the same courtesy.

Why should they push .....for anything? If they want to live like a normal 'family' let 's have the government pay for one of them , either one, to have a sex change. I think people would find that more accepting than 2 guys living together in holy or unholy matrimony. I just hate getting their lifestyle pushed into my face every time I turn around.
I gotta quit turning around......lol

Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman.
Thus, it should remain.

They should stop having Pride Parades because that makes the straight community fear what the gays may do
