I got a Gateway2000 computer that I want to take apart and get a new case and everything! It'll be used for gaming and media. Do I need anything special? What type of ram and do I need a new motherboard? Help will be appreciated.

well if your going to replace the cpu and the memory..

it'd be better just to keep that gateway 2000 and build youself a new computer. considering you can get a brand new Athlon 64 3800+ for about 80$ a good motherboard for that cpu (socket am2) for about 60-70$ and 1024MB for about 70$ thats more then half. you'll need a new power supply...40-50$ and a video card. for gaming you'll want a better video card with pci-e so say a 7600GT is in the middle range right now and can be had for about 100$ add a 250GB SATA 3G for about 70$ and you've got a working computer - the CD/DVD rom. but a DVDRW is about 20$ now.

so say about 600$ can build you a good enough computer to play most video games at decent performance.

all while keeping your gateway working for a back-up computer.

Hi. That is a pretty old PC to upgrade. Is there a reason you would not to upgrade? If so, increasing the RAM and RAM speed will help, as will adding a better, faster CPU. This may require a new motherboard, but you'll have to decide which. Good luck!
