the secret behind the secret is that they trick a bunch of gullible people into thinking positive making them more lazy because supposedly all you have to do is have a bunch of happy thoughts and you'll get anything you want psh

Well, I own both the book and the DVD, and have purchased the book for others.. I think that the author, Rhonda Byrne, decided to name the Book/DVD the secret as kind of an Oxymoron.. Because you are right, it's not a "secret" that positive thinking is the way to live.
But do you know how many people in this world don't actually realize this? Or that there are people like me who know all this stuff and really enjoy seeing and reading about other people's experiences and being inspired by those people and experiences?
The secret is the law of attraction.. Which many people do not understand or have never heard of! But, by asking this question, you yourself have attracted more information to yourself concerning the subject because you have thought about it. And that is just one example.
The wow factor for me was not that I never heard of that method before, but instead, I was able to reflect on MANY times in my life where the law of attraction delivered... That was my WOW-
We all hear from our parents growing up "you can be whatever you want to be", and "what goes around comes around" and "treat others how you want to be treated" This all stems from this very un-secret concept... That your thoughts and feelings go out to the universe and attract those like thoughts and feelings back to you...
As for your thoughts on this being a marketing ploy- I completely disagree with you. :(
It is true.. The people involved in making the secret are definitely going to make money off of it... But so do Fiction writers who write best sellers and actors who star in the movies.. Are you bashing them for sharing their life's work with you? That's all these people are doing in the secret, sharing their lifes work... And the end result of someone reading the book or watching the movie will most likely be positive-- and if not, it's because that person doesn't understand or doesn't want to understand or believe the law of attraction at all...
This brings your question full circle.. My opinion is that if someone who reads the book or sees the movie and is not affected in a positive way, then that person has NOT realized the power of positive thinking..

I have to concur with the fact that this book's target audience is those below age 30. Many authors under Nightingale Connant's motivational authors have indeed taught the Law of Attraction. I am sure this is a new twist on an old fact from centuries ago. This is just being re-marketed back to today, and of course in the eyes of the media, "there's no such thing as bad publicity". Contraversy sells--despite content.

You might want to go to www.abcnews.com and click on the Nightline link. They discussed this subject on Friday's show (March 23, 2007) Here it is for you: http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/story?id=2975835&page=1

The main "secret" behind every motivational program is simple, and it is spelled A-C-T-I-O-N. And yes, you too can become financially abundant... just re-brand an old ida and make certain to market it to the right crowd, and be featured on Oprah twice, and you just might start a media frenzy that everyone will talk about while it lasts.

Hope this sheds light.

The Secret" is about an Austrailian woman, Rhonda Byrne, who is at both a crossroads and a low point in her life. Emotional and downtrodden, she seeks out the answers to some of life's deeper questions such as "why we are here?" and "what's it all about?". In the midst of her journey she comes upon the law of attraction, aka "the secret", and realizes that this is exactly what she's been looking for. She then goes on to tell us that this information has been hidden from most of the population, hence the name, and that it was closely guarded by the powerful few. Although an argument can be made that this wasn't so much of a secret as it was simply a concept not accepted by most people, and that they have always been in complete control of their lives and their destinies, they just chose to believe otherwise for reasons of their own. Regardless of the truth, it is clear that the power of the Law of Attraction is now in the hands of anyone who wants to use it to create the life of their dreams. As Emerson wrote "dare to live the life you've imagined". !

Actually, it is helping people realize that what you put out there, is what you will get in return. Like the "mirror" effect. So if someone is treating you bad (or different in some way), it helps people realize that they are attracting that behavior to them and they can change it and get a good mate, friend, etc.

So, there's a little more to it than positive thinking.
It's amazing that people haven't figured that out before, but it is so obvious they don't.

I have heard women say, I keep meeting duds. Now, they know why - they are duds.

You're right, there's nothing new in "The Secret". BUT (and this is a big 'BUT'), packaging is important. Byrne has brought an ancient truth into the 21st Century, and I think it's just what we needed. I am buying the DVD for everyone I know. It is doing nothing except good.

What's really cool is that science has been proving the power of intention to affect physical matter for decades. I participated in some of the ground-breaking work at Princeton that discovered this. But it's just now making it into the mainstream.

Do affirmations and positive thinking work?

Absolutely! But most people are doing them wrong. There are four important ingredients to successful affirmations. And there are also nine common mistakes that sabotage affirmations.

I feel like you do! Been there done that, and it's no secret! But to the little ones it may be! I consider little anyone under 30 right now! I don't think they've heard of Tony Robbins, Dale Carnegie, and Earl Nightingale right!

Of course it's all about the marketing! Man WE need to write a book!

It's an old concept, being given a new spin, or at least a new spin around the block. It works; whatever we think about with any sort of emotion, is what happens. You know the old saying, "what goes around, comes around.." Well, that simplifies it, but it's true.
