first of all explain me the significance of Firewire. I don't know any thing about it. Do you buy a firewire card for your computer? Do I have to install it into the motherboard? how does it work? And is an USB audio interface better or worse than a firewire audio interface?

Firewire originally was developed by Apple Computer, Inc. as a high speed serial bus, a kind of ADB on steroids. Lots of steroids. While it was developed, many thought it was actually too fast, and some lower speed interconnect like USB would be cheaper to implement. Firewire languished. Suddenly, in 1995, a tiny connector showed up on the first DV camcorders shipped by Sony. DV was the killer app for Firewire. In late 1995, Firewire was accepted as a standard by the IEEE, henceforth called IEEE 1394.

Hi Firewire and USB are competing connections for high speed data transfer. At this point they are roughly equal in speed. They require an interface to allow connection to your PC, but both are sometimes installed on some machines. Firewire was the fastest until USB 2.0 came along to challenge it. Most WinXP machines now support both with USB 2.0 as a built-in plug..

Firewire is a high speed cable wire that plugs intoyour IEEE 1394 port located next to your USB Ports in front of most later computers.. They are used with hardware that require a high rate of speed. For example they are usually used with tranfering home movies from camera to your computer. Firewire is better than USB but USB ports work very well too.

Firewire is a fast data transfer protocol using a cable, it can be thought of as an alternative to USB and can be found on many video cameras and storage devices. It is also known as 1394b . Most later model macs and some newer pcs and pc motherboards come equpped with firewire. You can also simply add Firewire to your PC by adding a card such as this:
