Yes, I read them as I find it helpful to know what someone who has actually used a product thinks of it versus the advertising extolling its virtues. I seldom write them however.

Yes, reading reviews are always positive as far as getting an educated choice is concerned.

Writing them has myriad of reasons, although the author being paid to write them is a factor in me NOT reading them (reputable consumer magazines with independant categorical review aside, I do not wish to read infomercials) for me I rarely wrote those peer reviews, perhaps when I am especially peeved or found a feature useful.
