why did the people lock their arms the way they did when singing the song "we shall overcome"???

It was in the old civil rights campaign day and it was a sign of unity when they were usually having some sort of stand-in, sit-in, non-violent resistance to authority, where the police or National Guard were trying to forcibly remove them and take them to jail.
