8 years of post-secondary education and the best teacher I've ever had the luck of learning under was my freshman year high school honors science teacher. Mr. Markvenus.
He was a hard-@$$. He'd yell at the slightest provocation. His tests were more difficult than anything I'd had in college. 50 multiple choice questions and 5-10 problems with the formulae given. The problems were the easy part and I've always done well at multiple choice questions. It sounds easy enough! But his tests really did challenge you to prove that you actually understood the science.
He was great enough for that; for expecting the best from us and actually being able to teach it to us.
But he remains the best teacher I have ever had the privilege to study under because he loved science so much and, even, loved teaching so much that it came through in every class. I remember doing one lab where we grew crystals. That was my 5th grade science fair project. It was practically old hat to me. But he came around to our bench, leaned over to look at our crystals and said "look! You can see them growing!" just like a little kid would. He was just tickled by it.
He is my favourite teacher because he still loved everything about both science and his job and was even able to pass his excitement and knowledge to his students.
