1) Well I understand that the Qin was the first Dynasty to unify China, and the Han was the leader of so many new inovations, but I'm not really sure what they are. I know this will probaley be a long thread, so just keep the easy and intersting facts in the postings so we can ease into understanding the differnces, and not be confused.

2) The ruling philosofy of Qin was legalism and the one of Han is confucianism. Han was the first to implement confucianism as a ruling philosofy, that was the big difference, thou both Qin and Han used the legalist bearucracy as the political system.

3) Qin Dynasty lasted only about 15 years, from 221 - 206 B.C.
There were two Han Dynasties: The Western Han Dynasty ruled China from 206 B.C. to 9 A.C. The Eastern Han Dynasty reigned from 25 A.D. to 220 A.D.

4) Qin, though short-life, had a great impact on China, because it was during this time, that alot of unification policy was laid down and effected such as unification of common writing, measurement system, currency etc.. anything that was used to built a great nation. This include the esablishment of a centralised bureaucracy that was to be used for the next 2000 years.

However, it was Han who consolidated the chinese empire and gave China a common identity. It was also during Han dynasty that confucianism was first introduced as the state philosophy. Also, during Han Wudi's time, the empire expanded greatly to cover many regions that were previously beyond the realms of the chinese rule.

Qin Dynasty - standardizing writing, weights, and measures throughout his kingdom. only legalism was given official sanctio; all the books of the opposing schools of thought were burned except for the copies held in the Qin imperial library.

Early Han Dynasty - Taxes were reduced drastically, while the government played a smaller role in the economic policies. The establishment of Confucianism as the official ideaology over Legalism
