Bra is from the french 'brassieres'. So perhaps its not really a singular at all, just a contraction of a plural. But I don't know if the french word is plural or singular.

In the English language there are many "always plural" nouns. for example shorts, pants, scissors, etc. In some cases, you can use the singular form of the noun to make it sound better. You wouldn't say, where is my bras if you need only one.

Good question, and why are panties referred to as a "pair"? It's only one. Hmm, thoughts to ponder.
