I recommend a book called "The Titanic Conspiracy" by Gardner. He builds a strong and well-researched case for a common crime (at that time) of swapping ship identities to commit insurance fraud.

The Titanic and a nearly identical ship, the Olympic, could have been switched by a handful of people while they were in dry dock just weeks before the maiden voyage of the Titanic.

Motivation: The Olympic was severely damaged and was not insurable because of extensive damage. It is alleged that the ship was no longer sea worthy and would need to be retired. J.P. Morgan (hidden owner) demonstrated the ruthlessness to do this.

The ship was deliberately sunk with passengers on board.

Common Objections:

It would be hard to swap all the items on board:
Only a few items on board had the ship name because linens and china and other items were interchangeable between the ships. (By the way, a friend told me that when the 'Olympic' was retired, four of the anchors that were turned inward had the name 'Titanic' on them.)

No one would take the lives of thousands of people:
The rescue was planned, but it was badly botched.

Passengers and crew would have recognized the differences:
There were quick remodels during dry dock. The Titanic plans distributed to Titanic passengers did not match the floor plan. The boiler crew was completely replaced before departure.

The insurance did not cover the full cost of construction:
Any insurance recoup was better than scraping the ship after just a few days of service.
