I'm writing a mid-term paper on the state of the black family and I'm having a hard time finding a web-site/book on the living conditions of slaves. Of course I know what the horrid conditions are, but I need references. . . anyone know any good sites, besides wikipedia. . .?lol No racists jokes/slurs, please. . . I just need good sources. Thanx!

I can not help you with wed site but I would refer you to the book Uncle Toms Cabin. It was written prior to the civil war so I do not think you could get a better prospective. Although the book is fictional the sub stories of the characters are based upon actually happenings at the time. It is very difficult to read, it does not flow very well and must be taken as a task to do.

Hope it helps.

Most slave quarters were small and crowded. But some archeology has been done that found fairly sturdy buildings that, although small, were better than those of the poor whites of the time. It was simple economics. If you owned slaves then it made sense to see that they stayed healthy.

There is an excellent book called "To Be A Slave" by Lester and published by Dial Press. Check it out in your city library.
