I would teach Spanish because you get to talk about history, culture, grammar, literature, and so much more. You get to communicate in a different language and show students worlds that they could only have imagined existed. Learning a second language is a great way to exercise your brain and teach yourself how you learn. Students who study a second language tend to score better and be more successful than students who do not. How do I know this? I am a Spanish teacher and I think I have the best job in the world. I don't go to work every day, I get to teach and laugh and have fun and work hard and learn every day from the students I teach.

I did teach for 20 years, and I'd still say I love to teach math. I've always loved math. I love to teach so many subjects and one favorite part of the day was when I would read aloud to the kids after lunch. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Personal Finance. This is something that traditional age students as well as adults need help in! Managing your own personal finances properly is so important but very few have ever been helped to know how or even what that means! Even just balancing a check book can be foreign to many people.

So many people are living paycheck to paycheck with no savings. Many households are one paycheck away from losing everything to creditors. Debt is at a ridiculous amount. Without education on personal finance, statistics are only going to get worse.

Kids can't graduate from high school unless they know all of the elements in the Periodic Table. I've been out of high school for a very long time and I've never needed to know it since. But I need to know how to balance my checkbook and budget my paycheck - and not one course was taught on it nor was it ever mentioned.

Hey - thanks for the opportunity to get on a soap box for a minute! :)

English! Fluency of language, reading and writing skills, and an extended vocabulary are so crucial! First impressions, especially with employers and the like, are based on your writing and language skills- not your appearance. Think of how poor writing or speaking tends to immediately be associated with lower intelligence. Not to mention how sad it is that people are graduating HIGH SCHOOL without the ability to read! A grasp of the English language is SOO critical in this age of communication.
