My goodness, there are hundreds of novels about the Civil War. Perhaps the most famous (and certainly most successful) was Margaret Mitchell's 1936 "Gone With The Wind", a best-seller that is still being sold today.
If you want a current best seller, Charles Frazier's "Cold Mountain" has sold over a million copies in hardcover, more in paperback, and was made into a successful movie a couple of years ago.

The only stories written on the Civil War that were written by a participant are those of Ambrose Bierce who was Sherman's cartographer. He was shot at Kennesaw Mountain outside of Atlanta and mustered out the service.
Mark Twain, Samuel L. Clemens, participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge (Arkansas) and he might have written a humorous story.
Bierce's stories are not written in a humorous tone, for sure.
So find a copy of the collection of short stories by Ambrose Bierce entitled IN THE MIDST OF LIFE and get jerked around by reality.

The most famous & most popular novel about the Civil War is 'Gone With The Wind,' by Margaret Mitchell.
'Tap Roots' is good, too.
