What was the war the U.S. was involved in that started largely because we thought that some other country had sunk one of our ships, but historians later concluded the whole thing was an accident? Was it the war of 1812? i know something like this happened, but i havent found anything on google or wikipedia yet.

As above, the Spanish-American War. The battleship Maine had steamed around South America in record time. It was anchored in Cuba and blew up. U.S. Newspapers immediately announced it was Spanish activity that sank the Maine.

A few years back the wreckage of the Maine was raised, examined and taken out to sea and scuttled. The explosion was internal and would have been very different than if external. The explosion was almost surely fire leaking through a bulkhead into a magazine with large type shells.

It was the Spanish-American War, fought in 1898. The ship you're thinking of is the USS Maine. It mysteriously exploded, and since we had been looking for an excuse to go to war with Spain for a while anyway, the explosion was blamed on the Spanish.

Could you possibly be thinking of the Germans sinking the RMS Lusitania 2 years prior to the US entering WWI? The Lusitania had well over 100 Americans aboard that were killed. Britain tried to get the US to enter the war then, but the US refused for 2 more years. The Lusitania incident did change many sentiments against Germany, and added pressure for the US to join the war. It was a passenger ship, but the Germans insisted that weapons were hidden on it.

Is this the one you are looking for?

the war was the spanish american war. the battleship maine blew up mysteriously while anchored in the harbor off cuba.
we were looking for any pretext to invade cuba and wrest it from the spanish. the explosion on the uss maine provided that pretext. later investigations revealed the real culprit that probably led to the explosion was coal dust which ignited..
the date of the war was about 1896.
