Yep they were invented in Buffalo, NY and I just moved out here to Buffalo about a year ago. They take their wings very seriously, lol !! But I just wanted to mention that they don't have to be spicy. We got hot, mild, fire, bbq, plain and that's just in Dominos Pizza! There was a restaurant in NYC that was called Just Wings and they have over 50 different flavors of buffalo wings.

Because they are from Buffalo, NY. However, they are prepared in a specific way - deepfried (crispy) and with a hot (ok can be mild, medium, hot, etc) pepper sauce. In fact, in Buffalo we do just call them "chicken wings."
Anything marinated, with BBQ sauce, honey mustard, etc. are not "Buffalo Style" chicken wings.
I'm from Buffalo, and yes we do take our wings very seriously. Domino's wings are not worthy to be consumed! Best ones around are at O'Daniels bar on Abbott Road in Lackawanna.
