If you're not willing to pay the $150 for a DS / Lite, you'll most likely have to go with second-hand systems or even a refurbished system.
You'll most likely want to check out eBay, pawn shops & garage sales, ect. to get the price you're willing to pay.
Please be aware of the following issues when buying a used system:
1) NO WARRANTY! If anything goes wrong, you'll have to pay for repairs or replace it. Even if the system is still relatively new, the warranty only applies to the original owner (see issue 3).
2) Unknown battery condition. You don't know how long the battery will go on a single charge. A new battery normally runs for 20 hours on a full charge (on minimum brightness w/o WiFi usage), but it drops down to about 70% of that (~14 hours) after 500 recharges (or about 2 years).
You can buy a replacement battery for $20 (+$5 for the size-0 Phillips screwdriver, if you don't have one) & replace it yourself. This isn't a big issue, but it can be a pain as a "hidden cost"
3) Unable to register the system. The original owner usually registers the system with Nintendo (for warranty support). Unless the previous owner actually contacts Nintendo to transfer the registration or un-register the system, you won't get any support... especially if your DS / Lite gets lost or stolen.
4) May retain old owner's NWC information. When a DS goes online, it's given a DS code that stays in the system unless transferred. This is another ID deal that can help locate a lost / stolen DS. If games are purchased with the system (in a pawn shop or garage sale), you may also pick up the former owner's friend lists.
This can be annoying as well, but it can be fixed without the previous owner's assistance.
5) NO MANUALS! Another annoyance as the previous owner usually loses these & you usually needs these to fully know all the features of the system. These can be replaced, but it costs about $2 per manual... which can add up quickly as another "Hidden Cost"
If you're willing to go through these issues, the best of luck! otherwise, buy new.

The ds is inexpensive. >.> Have you heard of this thing called the psp? Over $200 ya know.
If you're really that much of a cheapo though, try GameStop/EBGames. Maybe you can pick up a used one or something. >.> Then again, there is craigslist.
