Normally people will say “gay” and mean a homosexual man. Sometimes you get a person saying “gay” and they mean every homosexual (male and female). It’s a bit like the way some people say “man” and they mean male and female (man being short for mankind, males and females). As a rule most of the time when you hear “gay” it’s usually male homosexuals.

maybelline512’s comments on the word “gay” aren’t true. In the UK years ago “gay” meant happy. It was also used to talk about heterosexual men who slept around with lots of women (he’s a gay man) and nothing to do with homosexuals. Well into the mid 20th century a middle-aged bachelor could be described as “gay” without any implication of homosexuality. It was only in recent years the word “gay” meant homosexual. Words change all the time. When I was a kid “wicked” meant really bad, but now a lot of kids say “that was really wicked” and they mean it was cool.

Most of the time it refers to men, but gay in general means homosexual, so you could use it to apply to women. Homosexual women are usually called lesbians, instead of gay.

usually. I've heard people call women gay, but it's much more normal to call women lesbians, and men as gay. and homosexual applies to both, I think.

Gay means happy. Or it used to. There was the "Gay Blade" which was a story about street gangs. There was "I'm happy, I'm pretty, I'm Gay," which meant happy. There was a girl in my school who had the middle name of Gaye. She never wanted anyone to know this since it ended up being used the wrong way. I'm not sure when it changed, but it did change. Gay now means queer. I think it took a long time for the lesbians to pick it up but now it applies.
