Whenever I've put money into my checking account through an ATM I've always used a deposit ticket from the back of my check books because that's what my parents told me what to do. But I've heard from friends and people I work with that if you're depositing at an ATM you don't need to use a slip.

So do I need to use a slip or not when making deposits? If I don't why do they still put them at the back of your check book if you don't need them?

--My account is with Wells Fargo if that makes any difference.

The money cannot be credited to your account without a deposit slip. If you do not use one, the bank teller will have to make one up. If you continue to deposit without a deposit slip, they will mail it back to you and ask you to fill one out. We are not paperless yet.

My bank will accept ATM deposits without a slip. Tough. I still fill out the slip, and keep a copy with the ATM receipt. Here's something you may not know. Your bank isn't responsible for the deposit until it's booked into your account. The only document you have to prove the deposit is that slip of paper. If they lose it, you want to be able to tell them how many items were lost, the amount and the payee of each item.

Your parents are correct. You need a deposit slip. Many banks have a deposit slip on the flap of the envelope to ensure that one will be included.
