Not exactly sure, but I have minimized how many letter I send since the price went up to 39 cents. I do most of my writings via email and have started doing online rebates, I will avoid buying stamps as much as possible.

The Post Office must just want to price themselves out of the business.

The Postal Service is the ony self supporting organization in the US Government. They do it by charging a reasonable fee for postage. Get real! $0.39 to mail a letter anywhere in the US with a huge reliability factor? What a great deal! You can't get it any cheaper no matter how you try.

Dont know actually, how ever it is better than deleivering it your self (gas) and flying to another state or country and cheaper than even a phone call out of state ..but nothing is cheaper than email :-) See so is 39 cents really that bad in comparison? Is it?

So, don't ship via US Post Office.

Send email. Ship UPS or FedEx or DHL. Sent a courier.

Nothing requires you to use the post office (except for a few situations involving formal service of process in court).
