geocities.com or tripod.com are free sites. However, for the money, the lack of headache (free sites suck) the TREMENDOUS space advantages and free support software you can have a very cheap space at Lunarpages for about 6.95/month. Believe me it is SO worth it.

Hi there khort29 :)
Although this strictly depends on the purpose of your website, but “free” domains and websites are by my opinion not worth your time, effort and energy...
Below is an extraction from Website Secrets Video Course, Training Guide – Volume 1, which besides other insider secrets also reveals and describes the BIGGEST downsides of free websites and why using “free” websites and domain isn't such a good idea at all...especially when it comes to starting, running and growing Internet business of any kind....
Here is a download link (it still works) if you want to find out more on building, managing and maintaining your own website...

(don't worry by .exe file..this is just an ebook file)
khort29, I wish you all the best with your websites...

---------------------
As you know, your own unique domain name looks something like www.yourdomain.com or www.your-domain.com, while so called “free domain names” usually look something like this:
1.www.freeforall.com/yourwebsite (sub directory)
2.yourwebsite.freedomains.com (sub-domain name)
3.www.freehost.com/12334 (sub directory)
Free domain names such as these listed above usually come with companies that are offering free website hosting or blogging services, where you you can upload and publish your website or blog on the Internet for free.
Reason #1
As you can see from examples above your free “domain name” is in all cases a sub directory or subdomain name of some website or blog hosting company.
Although visitors would come to visit your website, your traffic actually isn’t only yours. Hosting company also gets a lot of rewards and credits for your efforts within search engines. In other words, besides your website, you are also promoting somebody else's website and business.
Reason #2
All these "free" hosting companies will also give you all kinds of tools such as guest books, chat rooms, page builders, templates, clip arts, images and other things, which they claim will make your website more appealing and interesting to your visitors.
They will give you just about everything just to make you think "Auuaaa, I need to have this! Here are so many things to spice up my new web site! It will be great!". Don't let this confuse you.
Reason #3
All these "free" hosting company usually forget to tell you that usually almost half of space on your website will actually be owned by them. No matter if you create 1, 10 or 100 web pages, they will most usually place their image ads, text ads and pop-up windows on just about every single web page of your "free" website.
This way you are actually giving two good reasons to your visitors to leave your website. Either they click on one of those ads or they leave your website frustrated by seeing nothing but ads and banners.
How do you feel when being served with pop-up windows every time you visit a website? How does it feel like when you want to read something useful and interesting in peace, but you need 5 minutes to find an article on a web page? Believe it or not, most people don't like this too.
Reason #4
There are usually thousands of other websites sharing the same web server alongside your website, which usually causes long loading time of your website and all web pages within it.
Search engines and their spiders don’t pay a lot of their attention to slow loading websites. When spiders visit some web page within your website which takes more than 10 seconds to load, they will simply skip it and move on. But that's not everything...
Reason #5
Free hosting companies are literally magnets for spammers, porn, viagra-type, gambling and other “bad neighbor” websites, which you would share the same IP address with. Probably the last thing you will ever want is to have these kinds of websites for your neighbors.
It isn’t rare that if your “bad neighbors”, which you share the same IP address with, have a history of bad, unethical or manipulative behavior, search engines may simply prevent their spiders from visiting and analyzing all websites sharing the same IP address.
This way your website may easily loose high rankings within Google and other search engines just because one of “neighbours” did something wrong. No matter if you didn't do anything wrong, bad and unethical.
Reason #6
If you ever plan to start your Internet business, a unique domain name such as www.your-domain.com gives you way more credibility in the eyes of your potential business partners, customers, clients, subscribers and visitors than some free domain name such as my-domain.com.freedomains.com or www.free.com/pages/my-website/.
The truth is, not many people would be willing to do business with or buy something from someone with a website at dubious URL address. This is particularly true for most good affiliate programs on the Internet today, because most of them require their members to have their own unique domain names.
Reason #7
Most free hosting companies usually don’t offer tools for backing up and restoring your website. Regularly creating backup copies of your website is something what every responsible and smart business owner should take very seriously.
In case you mistakenly delete a file, directory or something else, or if your website suddenly crashes for some unknown reason, you need to manually restore and rebuild your website by hand. The more web pages you loose the more time you will spend for rebuilding and uploading web pages all over again.
Reason #8
If your free hosting company shuts down your website at URL address your-domain.free.com for some strange or unknown reason some day, all of your time, efforts and energy you have spent for promotion of this URL will suddenly go to waste.
You lose all of your traffic and the only way to recover your traffic and business is to start promoting and rebuilding your new website at some new URL address such as your-domain2.free.com from scratch all over again.
These were just a few reasons why I strongly recommend you to avoid using free domain names and free hosting companies. If you are serious and you truly want to start, run and grow your Internet business, free domain names won't do nothing good for your websites, traffic, web presence and your business.
