You could easily make a case for either side. I will try for both although i personally thought they didnt deserve to be in the tourney along with Stanford and Nova but thats another story. Here is the argument for BOTH sides, i think the "against" side has ALOT more reasons though:
FOR: Syracuse did win 20+ games and had solid wins over Marquette and especially over GTown. 10-6 in the BigEast which is a major conference and they were ranked higher than Villanova (who was not that great at all).
AGAINST: The BigEast has been a bust the last 2 years in the tourney after getting much non deserved hype during the reg. season. Out of 6 teams that made it only 2 have advanced to the sweet 16. Last season the BigEast was given 2 #1 seeds and had a record 9 teams in the tourney and 0 made it to the final 4, meanwhile the SEC has been "down" and last season got just 6 teams in and still had 2 when the final 4 rolled around (and everyone knows UF won it all). This season they were given just 5 teams in the tourney and 3 of them are still left alive in the sweet 16. Therefore they have done MUCH MUCH better in the tourney than the BigEast therefore knocking Arkansas for making it (and getting beat by a team still left, USC, who just knocked out the best college player in recent memory Durant and Texas) is flat out wrong since they made it to the SEC championship while the Orange didnt. The Orange only got in last season b/c they won the BigEast but were beaten fairly easily in the 1st round, which probably wouldve happened this season as well had they made it. Comparing the NIT to the NCAA Tourney isnt a fair comparison, success in the NIT means nothing, absolutely nothing. Miss. St. is rolling through the NIT as well - should they be in? No way. Again, the BigEast has been a letdown the last 2 yrs in the tourney and Syracuse beat up on alot of bad teams, had just 1-2 good W's, and had alot of bad L's. Just b/c you are a big name program and win 20+ games doesnt mean you should automatically get in (IE: Kentucky, who i am a fan of but damn they arent worth a f-. 0-8 against the top 25 this season).
Again i think the reasons "against" Syracuse are overwhelming.

No NCAA tournament has ever been ruined by the fact that some bubble team didn't get in...it only ruins it for that team's fans.
The committee has a tough job. As someone pointed out earlier, if the Orange wins the games they're supposed to win, they would have been in. But if you're not ready to play every night and you end up losing to some teams that you should beat, then you leave it up to OTHER people to decide if you get into the dance or not.
If Syracuse, being in the Big East, just takes care of business, they would be in every year. The Big East is a well-respected conference.
Considering the way the tournament has gone so far, it appears that the committee did a heck of a good job seeding the teams that made it.
Will Syracuse learn from this season to take care of business in the future, so as not to leave it up to the committee's judgement? We'll see.

Thier fate would have been just the same as the afore mentioned teams in your question. They really didnt beat anyone on the road, and they had a pretty weak non-conference schedule. Not to mention they didnt win but 1 game in thier conference tourny. No, not safe to say. Just because you are mediocre in a power conference shouldnt hand u a big dance invitation.

No. If Cuse plays it's guts out and wins the games they should...it's a no brainer.Because they are like every other team with similar records..the committee chose another team. Coach now feels they should make the field larger now...65 IS enough.

Syracuse reaped what they sewed. They were horrible the first half of the season, and then turned it up. You can't do that and expect to be in the Tourney.

I think it's a little unfair, but kansas st. should have gotten in too. Other than those two I think the selection comittee did good.

If you have to make an argument for a team to be there, then they probably shouldn't be there.
