What is the difference between a cowboy and a settler. Also this time period is way back right after the Civil War and Reconstruction Period. I just need their differences and how they are the same in some ways.

Cowboys were boys that worked at least once with cows, took care of them and their calves, moved them, repaired fences and generally did all the chores at the ranch. Many of them who weren't able to keep steady jobs drifted from place to place and gained bad reputations. Some became thieves and robbers. I never heard of any that died wealthy. Some cowboys I'm sure wanted and were able to get their own ranches especially right after the civil war in the south and southwest.

Settlers were the farmers that opened the west , that broght civilization to towns. They were the ones who wanted and had families to support. Once they found good land and were able to put in their time and improvements they usually stayed put.
