Is an automobile fuel pump suppose to run for as long as the engine is running? Isnt it suppose to automatically stop when the gas in the fuel injector is adequate and start again when it's low? The reason I asked is this: I had a new fuel pump installed and I can hear it whirring away for as long as the engine is running, even when my car is idling.

Electronic fuel injection uses a pump that runs continuous and excess fuel is run through a return line back to the fuel tank. The newer GM models have come up with a dead headed system that has no return line and excess fuel is routed back through the pump itself. Regardless the pump never shuts off unless the ignition is switched off. The old carb engines using electric pumps did shut off after the bowl filled up, but as the float in the bowl dropped down the pump would kick back on.

most fuel injected engines need 40 pounds per square inch fuel pressure to run correctly.many also use a fuel return system which circulates the fuel back to the tank.the pump should run all the time the engine is running.many late model gm trucks and suv models equipped with vortec engines have extremely loud fuel pumps this is normal, also many aftermarket pumps for any application are loud.hope this helps.

an electric fuel pump will run as long as the engine is running the fuel injectors have to have pressure on them for them to be able to spray fuel

After market electric fuel pumps are often noisier than the better quality and quieter OEM pumps. That is why you hear the pump whirring. They both run at all times and are regulated either internally or inline depending on the design.

your fuel pump will run when the engine is runing . when you turn the key on it will cycle for a few seconds just to get up to pressure. there is also a fuel preasure regulator that if the preasure gets to high it feeds the fuel back into the tank.
