If you are asking why men ask out women instead of vice versa, it has to do with us living in a patriarchal society, meaning society where man is considered more important than woman. That is slowly changing however and women are starting to ask men out more often.

During the early- and mid-20th century (1920s to 1960s), dating was considered to be a social pastime in which most single young people would participate. After the advent of women's movement, the men's movement, the sexual revolution, and other movements that have shaped modern Western culture, this "old-fashioned" form of dating waned in popularity, giving way to what became known as "hanging out" and "hooking up". Formal dating, where one person (usually the male) contacts another person (usually the female) to arrange a date gave way to more casual encounters, including casual sexual encounters.

Many people are now expressing a lack of satisfaction with this way of doing things. The popularity of online dating services is seen by some to indicate a growing desire among singles to meet for "traditional" one-on-one dates, and to date socially, without necessarily having the expectation of either a sexual relationship or a long-term romantic relationship.

Purpose? Do you mean the difference?
The purpose of a man asking a woman or a woman asking a man out if the same - to meet someone to love..for some company?

A girl lived with her parents and under their authority. A young man would initially be allowed to visit or walk with the family. To take the courtship at stage further, and get some privacy, he would ask the young lady to "walk out" with him. For a girl to agree implied that things were getting serious. Neighbours would see them unchaperoned and it could be assumed that the next steps were engagement and marriage. No girl would go "out" with someone that she was not seriously interested in.

The purpose is that the lady is the princess and the man is the prince. I think that's why.

Becuase when the man asks the girl out it shows courage and a strong personality: all traits a male should have.

So that she gets to choose whether to accept, or decline. That way the guys get to take all the rejection etc.

This gets extended to every little detail eventually, so that you have to take the initiative, and thus the blame, if and when the thing turns to worms.

Sorry, but that's just the way things are.

it's a cultural tradition.
in societies with arranged marriage this tradition would not exist.
usually the person with more power in any situation does the inviting ...the less powerful wait to be invited. inviting is providing something. being invited is accepting (receiving something). men have traditionally had more power.

Traditionally men had jobs and income to pay for a date. And thank you for making those of my generation feel even older.
