I've seen plates around, and I've noticed that newer cars have the higher numbers infront like a 5. Older cars have a 3 or 4. Trucks have 6 or 7s. Is it just me? or is there something to this?

Yes, there's something to it. The older the car, the lower that first digit. Very old cars have 6 digit plates.

California doesn't recycle plate numbers. The plate number goes to the junkyard with the car. Other states, the owner keeps the plate and transfers it to his new car, so they were able to keep 6-digit plates for a lot longer.

The first number on the California license plate is a code indicating the year in which the plate was originally issued.
