why the turtle will be placed up high for him to ADMIRE not play with or stick in his mouth like the "experts" said turtles carry salmonella and the "brainy acks" noticed my son is 1! Which is to young for a dog, cat,or any other animal...I know the risks and I also know that I will be the one taking care of it just as I am the one that takes care of my son and his well being!!!

As a mother- you should appreciate that everyone is concerned for the welfare of children and we give information incase it is needed... you should also have more sense than to throw a tantrum in a public forum. No one here knows who you are or what you know... warnings given here are no more personal than the ones on lables... think about it... if every mother knew everything, kids wouldn't die each day of stupid preventable accidents.
Incidently... adult turtles DO carry salmonella. the person who said only babies do is incorrect... and here are some good sites for reading in case you are interested in knowing more.

Well, start at a local pet store, thats the best place. Or you can go online to LLLReptile.com, they have great animals. Most turts will need 40gals of water, at least, so check that first. Good luck!

I know why experts say things like that, I was watching a show and a kid let a skink hang off his nose and then did something horrifying: let it hang off his mouth! No wonder kids get salmonella! And the parents were right there!

sounds like you got your head in the right place by keeping turtle out of childs reach, most people dont read the entire question prior to answering and then a few more think they know all there is to know about the subject and actually make themselves out to be fools (i.e. salmonella only in babies??) ok im done ranting, so you want a turtle.... i see them in almost all pet shops on a regular basis i would recommend you to locate a pet store that specializes in exotic pets and reptiles since they usually have knowledgeable staff willing to give you the all the advice needed to have a healthy pet, plus they usually have healthier pets as a result. if you need caresheets i'll list a great sites. best of luck to you and your new pet

Geez calm down. If you know so much, then try a pet store. I see turtles all the time.
I think people were just concerned, because it is a weird pet to have around with such a young child -- he doesn't have to touch it himself to get salmonella.
And if you look at the way you worded your question, you said it would be the child's first pet. It sounds more like it's your pet and he gets to enjoy it.

Just so you know a whole lot of work goes into taking care of a turtle. Also, the tank is a pain to clean (it stinks). Not to mention that they bite! I got bit once when I was to careless in picking up the turtle.
Wait a bit longer. The kid isn't going to like the turtle. Its for the adult not the child in this case.
Wait till they are at least 7 yrs old for their 'own' pet.

Only the baby turtles carry salmonella. This is why the pet stores require you to buy a turtle 4 inches or bigger. If you keep them healthy and clean you should be fine. They do bite so i would keep it away from you child.
