Nothing, most of them are either insane or substance addicted. Unfortunately the ACLU was able to curtail the government's power to forcibly commit these people to mental institutions. This was the genesis of the huge growth of "homeless" in the 1980's.

Not a whole lot ! Most of them are homeless because they want to be. If we are to help the homeless, it should be families that we help, first. Children should never be without a roof over their heads. Families that find themselves in a situation like this deserve all the help they can get, to get back on their feet.
Many individuals who are homeless, are suffering from mental disorders. In some cases, they were in a home until state budgets started hacking the support these people once had, and to the streets they went !
Is this a government problem ? Or is this our problem ? To often, we point to the government to correct problems that we can't solve, well it appears the government can't, either.
So, what should we do about it ??????

The problem with spending money on helping the homeless is it's been proven to be inneffective. A lot of the homeless are that way due to drug abuse or mental illness. These people can't function in normal society, so to try and help them "get on their feet" usually fails. I've really come to the conclusion that there isn't a whole lot the government can do. Even with its programs to help the homeless, so much money is lost within the government beuracracy. The best method to help the homeless is to rely on private volunteers and donations to nonprofit organizations like religious groups and such. They are much better at spending their money on the actual problem, rather than wasting most of it on paperwork and such.
The answer is NOT to tax more. As I pointed out, our tax money is mostly wasted within the government. By cutting taxes, businesses actually have more money to expand, which means more jobs, and more people earning their own way and staying off the streets. Strengthening the economy is one of the best ways to reduce homelessness and the poor.

A large percentage of the homeless are mentally ill. About twenty five years ago the idea arose that treating the mentally ill as "out patients" who would be given meds and cure them for entry into the general population. In California most of the State Hospitals for the Mentally ill were closed down. Problem was the ill did not keep up there meds and reverted back to their old way and ended up on the streets. The state saved money but greatly exacerbated the homeless problem. But now we are faced with an even bigger problem.

Now isn't the right time to ask this kind of question. We simply do not have the time to talk about this lazy bastards who just couldn't do anything to help themselves. They did it to themselves.......
All I can think is that it all comes down to us the little people who must do what it takes to help these poor homeless, people. The government people have no interests in these. The liberals only talk about it, but no actions were taken. The consservatives sure don't want to have anything to do with them, because they're too busy counting their pennies and complaining about how much money had been taken away from them. So I believe this issue is going to be around for a long time before our leaders realized that we are concerned about it.

Sadly this country of politicians have turned
their lives away from this problem. So many years have passed yet still this problem exists today. How deeply sad, a well known country like ours, the richest, yet
with many homeless because no one really cares. How sad it is.. yet it remains. Some out there have choices but the elderly have none. Perhaps the answer is:
More need to care and our government should as well too. Indeed they should be first in line to help them get back on their feet,

Create social programs and get them involved so they can make money and get off the streets. Maybe create a shelter where homeless people can live for a very small amount until they find a job or something and then they have to move out or there rent should start increasing.

Get government out of it! Let the people handle this kind of thing at a local level. The government can best help by giving us even larger tax breaks and get out of our personal lives! Americans are the most compasonite and generous people on earth and we can handle things like this better then government.

Screen them and separate the homeless from job displacement, divorce and treatable depression and the others: the one's who are just unable to step up to the plate and swing. You know the Insane Street Person type.
For the latter group, I honestly don't care what they do with them or where they ship them off to, as long as they aren't breaking into my car and trying to mooch from me on every corner. Just remove them, thus giving more money to the cause of helping the one's who really will put that help to good use and re-enter society.

well with all of the tax money that is spent on very frivoulous things lately (studies to see if smoothies cure alzhiemers), poiticians getting paid well over 100,000 per year. along with god knows how much is going into area 51, i would hope they could do more for the homeless and the veterans of former wars. the govt can do so much to help everyone but they CHOOSE not to. why? they get paid too much money, them politicians shouldnt get paid more than 50,000 a year. they dont listen to what WE want they make their own decisions, they get paid by big companies, why should WE pay for them to make their own decisions when we do pay them to make our decisions and they dont even listen to us.
