Approach record producers. Record production companies always have very close contact with all their artists and also freelance musicians, songwriters and so on. You don't say where you come from, but, depending on the song style, look up the Yellow Pages on line for record producers and make contact with the companies. The other way of doing it is to go into a music store and choose artists who record similar material, look at the CD to discover the name of the production company and make contact with them.

In Australia there are branches of large companies like Sony and smaller companies like BMG. If you make contact with them, arrange a meeting and go from there. Take your lyrics with you of course so that their producers can see if it is the sort of material which would interest them. They are more likely to put you in touch with a musician to put music to the lyrics to produce the final song and it goes from there.

It is always best to have an agent if you are selling any sort of intellectual property. So, if you can afford it, find yourself a music agent who will do the work for you and you don't pay if they don't perform. Remember that because it is important.

There are also talent scouts everywhere at all kinds of gigs but unless your song is complete, they will not take any notice of you. You need a musician or ask a band you know to help you put the melody to the lyrics. That is the whole package and is much more saleable. Even go to gigs where your kind of music is being played and ask the bands if they are willing to have a look at your songs! You would be amazed by how many great songs have been bought in a rough state, worked on and are still great classics.
