If you don't keep it very clean, it will smell up your room. Also the noise of the air pump, filter, wate cycling, etc is pretty annoying until you get used to it. But platties are colorful and inexpensive. Guppies and tetras are pretty, too.

It's totally worth it, but I'm not sure about a bedroom. How much time do you spend in your bedroom (other than sleeping)? If it's not a lot, you're not going to be noticing the tank very much. Also, most tanks have evaporation problems. Thus, regardless of whether you're doing water changes (as you should) or just replacing the evaporated water, you will likely have the sound of running water in your bedroom several nights a week (unless you religiously top off your tank, which can be irritating). Personally, that's a sound I don't need when I'm trying to sleep, although I find it soothing when I'm studying, reading or eating. Finally... who else is going to be able to enjoy it? Probably just you and your significant other. However, most of our house guests love our 29g and 12g aquariums and comment on them a lot. People love well decorated and tastefully stocked aquariums -- don't hide it in your bedroom.
As for beginner deals and fish, start with freshwater. A saltwater setup will be too expensive if you decide in 3 months you don't like the hobby. Also, saltwater tanks should be at least 50 gallons, whereas you can reasonably get away with a 12 gallon freshwater tank. There are too many good starter fish to list them all, but some good ones include rainbows, tetras, mollies, and guppies.
Stay away from micro aquariums. Your fish will die and you'll be frustrated. If this is your first tank, you should probably get a 29 gallon, but if you're careful and diligent you can probably get a 12 gallon Eclipse tank. The cost is just about the same, but the Eclipse is easier to setup because almost all of the components are included (it includes a filter and ight but you'll need a heater and decorations).

Fish tanks can be a lot of fun, at first you might feel frustrated b/c some of the fish will die, I suggest that you get at least a 20 gallon one, this was my first tank and it is not too big or too small, I went with natural plants too, made it look as natural as I could, I think it gives a better calming feeling, forget the colored stones and things like that, the fish to best start out with are blue and red neons, a few angel fish, some guppies altogether, they get along well, after having those for a while you can add some others, like there is a silver back spotted "cat fish" I forget its name but they are fun to have b/c they are bottom dwellers, so, you will have the little fish occupying the whole tank, the angel fish in and around the middle and top and than some bottom dwellers. Also, having a bubble wand in the back of the tank will add to the "calming effect" Take it slow, don't rush b/c you will get tired of the fish dying and give up maybe, it takes a little time to establish a nice tank, I think it is definitely worth it

If you have a good filter you wont get noise. I position my filter so I get a slight trickling noise which i find soothing. I would get a heater and get tropical fish. Few mollies and after a while when tank is mature enough some noeon tetras, once you settle neons they are great fun and become hardy. neons need to be in a school of at least 6 though as there schooling fish, being small they find securoty with each other from the larger fish/ Cory pandas are nice to have aswell.

Your room won't scent until eventually you enable the water get extremely nasty. So weekly 10% water modifications. form in "Betta Fish" Google pictures. If that's no longer a betta then opportunities are high your tank is plenty too small and your fish will in all probability die. Even Bettas choose a 2 a million/2 gallon tank with a small clear out and heater with the intention to be healthy.

I would do a tropical tank, it is more exciting than goldfish yet a LOAD more affordable than a salt tank. They are not too high maintenance as they just need cleaned every few weeks and a filter change. They do require a heater though!
There are many tropical fish that are wonderful and easy to keep. They have tetras, fancy guppies, danos etc. Best bet is go consult with someone at a pet store and find out what they have to offer that is hardy to keep

I think having a fish tank in your room is a great idea. I have 2 tanks in my house. I suggest getting Koi (?) as your first fish. They are kinda hard over feed or kill but they a cannibals and will eat any other fish in the tank. Once you have had your tank for 6 months to a year, then you can look into getting more expensive or fancier fish without the worry of them dying in a week.

i have a 60gallon hex in my bedroom with a few oranda in it. My biggest suggestion is to get a tank with no air pump, just a power filter, it would be even better to get a canister filter, because they make the least noise
keep the tank filled because the splashin is the biggest hassle with bedroom tanks, i would start with a 20 gallon, its big enough to make things easy on you chemically, but small enough not to be intrusive,
im partial to goldfish but they really arent for small tanks, maybe tetras or mollies would be nice tranquil fish for you
take care

Get a 20 gallon and you can have 2 small goldfish and a algae eater but thats it. It is soothing and will help you fall asleep. If you are looking to tropical fish guppies, mollies, or tetras are great. I just put one in my bedroom and I love it. It is small only a 10 gallon but I am looking forward to geta bigger one.

Yes it is. Trust me, I have one in my bedroom and it helps to fall asleep. As for fish....Tuexedo guppies, rosy minnows, Danios, White clouds, Barbs, or Rasboras. They are really good beginner fish.
