I've had it many, many times and it's really good, especially if it's done properly. If it's chewy, it's been cooked too long, or not long enough. Calamari is weird - it has to be cooked for either a very short time or a very long time. In the middle, it tends to be too chewy.
It's very good battered and fried - several restaurants in our area serve it this way with a sweet and sour dipping sauce, or a spicy sweet dipping sauce. I've also had it with marinara sauce. I've also had it grilled and that was excellent as well, although probably not as "user friendly" for someone who has never tried it before.
If you haven't tried it, you may want to think about it. It's not a strong taste and you might find that you enjoy it.
The strangest foods I've seen on TV are the ones they have on the Survivor food challenges and that is some GROSS stuff. The oddest food I've ever eaten would probably be alligator or rattlesnake.

I have had calamari it was very good. I have never seen the strange food show. The oddest thing that I have ever eaten is probably deer.

I actually like calamari. But i cant handle baby squid, it makes me sick. Ive watched many shows on strange foods and one of the weirdest i ever tried was witchety grubs. I threw up promptly afterwards...*shakes with disgust*

I have had calamari - it's delicious! Especially deep fried with a marinara dipping sauce. I don't think I have seen the show you are referring to, but the strangest food I have ever had was chocolate covered crickets (crunchy) and rocky mountain oysters (deep fried bulls nuts) Yum!!

yeah I have had it and I am with you...I did not like it very much and no would not have it again..I have seen some shows on strange foods...I would have to say pig ears and chicken feet (other than escargot and calamari) as to weird or odd foods I have eaten.

Yes...it's just squid...lol tasted like chicken. LOL I tried it off of my bro's plate when we went to P.F. Chang's....it's pretty good actually. It might be the oddest food I've ever eaten and actually liked.

It was actually pretty tasty.
I have tried frog legs (good), brains (not so good), and tripe (disgusting)
Never seen the strange food tv show.
