This is a question that could go into a very long answer.. if their is one. But I'll offer a short answer. I personally believe we are encoded as humans with a moral fiber that dictates what is wrong or right. And this is what dictates social stability. But some people would say that would be wrong, because to have a moral code ingrained in us, that would require a moral law giver. (God) So if you lack belief in a moral fabric, then I suppose religion "sustains" society. Our country for example. Our society defines what is deviant based upon Judeo-Christian values. If the bible says it wrong, then it more than likely is against the law. Albeit, more laws are passed that contradict Judeo-Christian values and I believe it is starting to become our particular country's downfall because we can't figure out what is wrong or right anymore, therefore stability is threatened.

Thru the political processes of discussion, propaganda, lobbying, activism, argument, and publicity. People urge others that "something must be done about that", or that "we should leave well alone".
All the arguments about abortion, drug laws, euthanasia, the correctness of jury verdicts, etc, are the processing of defining deviance.

we have normal people. who love the neighbors,, live decent, pay their responsibility. take care of their children, parents, all that is good in society. if a square pole, doesn't fit the round hole, it is unstable. perverts are not considered normal.
