If you're looking for the 1st permanent English colony in the New World, that would be Jamestown, est. in what is now Virginia in 1607. If you specifically want New England, which consists of the Northernmost states of the Eastern Seaboard, that would be Plymouth Colony, est. by the "Pilgrims" who came over on the Mayflower in 1620. They had intended to settle near Jamestown, but were terribly off course and were forced to fend for themselves through the bitter New England winters. Puritan immigrants established Massachussetts Bay Colony in 1630 in what is now Boston. Plymouth Colony was ultimately absorbed into Mass. Bay Colony.

Plymouth colony

Edit: As to the answers before and after me, Jamestown was in what became Virginia, Roanoke was on Roanoke Island in what became North Carolina. Neither are located in New England.

Jamestown was the first and it was settled by a bunch of rich British men that were seeking to become richer. Roanoke was earlier, but mysteriously disappeared.
