From my personal experience if the physique portrayed on the big screen is not digitally enhanced then i'd say there is a high chance of taking some kind of steds to get that kind of size in that space of time. I believe that there is more chance especially since he was training with a professional bodybuilder.
This is my opinion though.

Menshealth.com has a full article about how he got in shape for the movie, but I guess only Mr. Butler truly knows if he did or didn't use steroids. Computer imagery probably helped him a bit as well....

Looking at the shape of his stomach (beginning of turtle gut) and taking into account he got really fat not long after that I d say he was determinately on roids and HGH.

No, he simply worked his *** off big time. He worked out harder than professional athletes for his role. So no drugs, just pure dedication.
