If the slowness is booting up only, then you can optimize that some, but it can only boot so fast. If you are using a lap top, most of then go to standby when you close the lid, and you can avoid the start up, no need to shut down.

If its a desktop, well you really don't need to shut it down, unless you just want to save electricity.

As far as your computer running slow, well it could be a lot of things. I would first look at your Ram, if you want speed, you need the Ram at least 512. Your Ram is where a lot of the speed comes from.

So see what your Ram is, if its lower, then you can pick up some at Staples, Office Depot, and other places. Take your lap top with you, they will help you change it. It is real easy.

Ram costs vary, but to get 512, depending how much you already have, about $100.00. And you will see the diffrence.

probably spyware and other unwanted programs working in the background Get Ad Aware SE, for free install it update it and run it. It will detect loads of stuff you can wipe out. Then you have to delete all your temporary files too. Basicly if you use the internet a lot, your computer is swamped with all kind of software you don't know about. AVG has a good program for spyware, the first 30 days are free, so you have time to clean. Set your search machine to AVG, lots of luck :-)

There could be a lot of reasons for it to be slow. How long have you been using this installation of windows XP? Windows XP becomes slow as you use it by day.. I would recommend you to do some maintenance work on your computer. like clear all the internet cache, delete all the temporary files that are not necessary..

You dint mention what's slow on your computer... if its just the startup then you can do this

click on start - run

type in msconfig

click on startup tab and remove all that you think is unnecessary in the list by unticking the tick box.... and restart... let me know if you have any issues..

all the best...

when u can talk about free space, i believe u also know about free RAM and u might have done virus/spyware checking. so now remove any unneccessary software from startup. remove entry from start-program files- startup
also type msconfig in start-run press enter and goto startup remove tick from useless ones and restart.

clear temporary internet files.

press ctrl+alt+del and check which process is kiling ur cpu and RAM. end task unneccessary ones. if u have knowledge then u can check if any nonsence service is running by typing services.msc in run and disable them. be carefull wrong step adversely effects.

u should go for defragment

if these don't solve u can go for restoration of corrupt files if any. put Xp Cd in drive and type cmd and press enter
type sfc /scannow and wait for it to complete.

these steps should make it bit faster

if not format

Viruses can cause it. If you have spy sweeper that has 12 shields on all the time that will slow it. It also depends on how much you use it. A computer wares out the more you use it. If you wanted to make it faster you could try putting so more memory on it.

I am no expert but I can recommend that you download and use a utility program called Advanced Windows Care Personal.

www.iobit.com/

It has worked here better than Nortons or System Mechanic.

I am assuming that it was faster at one time...Try a disk defrag this usually speeds up your computer by 40% if you have allot of fragmented files..good luck
