Actually, if you study the history of cannibalism in humans, and other primates for that matter, it all boils down to the context they are in.
For example, some (emphasis on SOME) Polynesians tribes are cannibals. They claim they gain strength by consuming the body of a conquered foe. In fact, they do the islands the live in lack large animals from whom they could get protein. They were short of animal meat so they had to look for another source of protien.
All other cannibalism (originally) boils down to need. They needed food that's why they resorted to eating humans. Of course later on they wrapped the whole thing in mysic mumbo jumbo like "You will gain his strength", "You are showing that's you utterely beaten him" etc.
And yes.. Cannibalism is in our genes.... they basic need for self-preservation.... no amount of rationalism or post-modernity can take that away.

I do not know why some people may think that but, I do know that If A person was starving to death they would not have many options except to eat some dead or alive.

it has to be in our genes cos when i get hungry by god i could eat a scabby leg!!!!!people have done it 4 years,what about the mountain climbers who had to eat their frends to stay alive?its instinct we make do with what we have..

You rarely see the same species eating eachother. Sharks eat other fish, but they wont eat other sharks.
