I agree with your parents. It's not law, but best practice. Buy baby her own ticket, most airlines have discounted tickets for children (not the on-your-lap kind).
You WILL need a carseat to get baby to the airport. Might as well bring that in & use it, and have it when you get to where you're going. It will also make it easier when boarding. You will already have enough other stuff to carry. If you get a stroller that fits the carseat (usually they're called travel systems, but some stand-alone strollers do fit certain carseats), she'll be easy to transport until you get to the gate. Pre-board, gate check the stroller, get in the plane, put the carseat in her airplane seat, put your carry-ons (diaper bag, purse, etc) away, strap her seat in, and all this time you're not blocking the aisle. You might want to call the airline and ask if they will heat up water for milk, so you have a bottle for take-off. Or, if you use a pacifier, that might help. The swallow reflex helps with the ear pressure when taking off and landing.
You can also use a sling, BUT baby needs to be removed from the sling for take-off and landing.
If you have more questions, check out www.car-seat.org. There are quite a few child passenger safety technicians on the forum who will be happy to help you out.

Even before you get to the airport your baby will need to be in a good car seat in the car! You take that same seat on the plane with you so that you can secure your child for safety. THEN, when you get to where you are going you have that car seat for any car there. Your parents are absolutely right.

No, you don't need a carseat. Get yourself a good sling and you'll be set. I'd be willing to bet the baby sleeps the whole flight with the noise, vibrations, and being close to you. It will save you some money, and you probably wouldn't use the extra seat anyway. Keep in mind, you will need a good carseat anyway, regardless of whether or not you need one for the plane.

They can ride on your lap. If you do bring a carseat it must be approved for use on an airplane and you will have to buy a seat for her. You can get a discoutned seat usually.

On international flights they are required to be in a carseat. On domestic flights they can be held in the lap age 1 and over. Newborns need a car seat regardless of domestic or international.

no you are not allowed car seats on the plane sorry. baby has 2 be seated on your lap at all times and when seat belt signs are on baby must have a seat bely around his/her waist it is a seat belt like yours it threads through yours and then you fasten the buckle around baby. hope this helps and if its a long distance trip overseas you can request a bassanette for your baby 2 sleep in if it is a little baby. hope this helps you a bit.
