I've done it--stayed in Mexico for 6 weeks, lived with a Mexican family, traveled all over Central Mexico, learned lots about Mexican culture and the Spanish language! I had a blast! My host mother was an awesome cook--her family owns a restaurant and does catering.

It was very inexpensive for 6 weeks--only about $20 a day to live with a host family. All I had to do was go to school and do my homework. There are lavanderias in the city where I stayed that did my laundry for me. It ran about $5 a week.

You go to one of the travel sites like Expedia, and airfare is cheap. I traveled within Mexico on the weekends. Bus fare is very inexpensive. Youth hostels are very inexpensive, and if you prepare some of your own meals, it will bring the cost down further. You can use some of the savings to travel in the country.

The climate in the mountains is very comfortable in the summer. The temperature topped off at 80º.

I needed a light jacket when I visited Mexico City in August. Sometimes the high would be about 65º.
