The engine isn't the determining force as to which wheels are driven. You can have the engine in the front, middle or back of the car, but the transmission, driveshaft and final drive location(s) are what makes a car front, rear or all-wheel drive.

i own a shop,and this is done with an extra drive shaft and a small differential that helps this out,it only transfers power to the wheels that actually need it,good luck hope this helps.
