Love my old mails, ideally want to get rid of JUST what is necessary

I don't think it is just emails (text) which are usually a few kilobytes each. You must have some large files in there as attachments, like photos.

What you can do is download the attachments to your computer, then delete the email. If you would rather have the attachments in an online storage, you can create a new email account and send them there.

Empty the "Sent Mail" folder. If that doesn't free up enough, then upgrade to "Mail Plus" at $19.99/year or better yet, get Gmail.

Well if you want to get more capacity you have to pay them. They can only offer free 1GB, and if you want more this time you have to pay them. So you could either pay them online and get more capacity or stay with the free 1GB and just delete the unneccessary email.

a) Pay to get more space
b) Delete sent messages folder and unnecessary emails
c) get a g mail account
