Me and my boyfriend are going to Alexandria to see a friend next week. We're arguing about taking our passports or not, I'm just afraid that we might lose them or something.......my b/f is saying we should take them coz we won't be able to get a hotel room......why would they require a passport......ain't I right?

Yes he's right. Sorry girl, I would love to say you won. But I can't not this time.
As visitors from overseas the hotel will be required by law to sight your passport.
This is more for your security than anything else. You should request it straight back , as you are required to have your passport and visa on you at all times when visiting in an overseas country.

Yes, any hotel anywhere in Egypt will require a passport. Also, if you are not married, you may not be able to stay together. If you are a western couple, they may allow it. But, if one of you is Egyptian, they positively will not. In any case, it is at the hotels descretion as to whether or not they will require you to have two rooms. I speak from experience. I am Western and my husband is Egyptian. We had to show our marriage certificate every time we stayed in a hotel there.

if you are coming into Egypt you need your passport anyway. or no entry, if you are traveling as an Egyptian you need your id we all have I'ds
and marriage licence to share a room. I own a hotel in Luxor and know the requirments the police come to inspect the registry.they often do for the free tea

Yes you must have your passport. But for foreigners they do not insist on marriage papers. If you have an egyptian residence permit it should do. As for losing the passports, it is safer to keep them with you rather than anywhere in Egypt where you can not reach quickly.

As far I remember every hotel in the world is asking for my passport when checking in except if I have the country's I.D.

You have to show your passport / ID in order to reserve a room. you can still keep them safe in the hotel safe or with the reception so you dont lose them

The foreigners are reqired for hotel reserving in China. Even the Locals are required to teach their idendity card. the explanation why lodges try this way of element is to sidestep unlawful issues happen.

You must have your passport to stay in any hotel in egypt, no exceptions. sometimes they will take a copy., but I wouldnt' count on it.

you need an id to enter an hotel .You can ask the hotel which id would be accepted

sure you have take your passport at any place you go in Egypt,because Egypt is a police country and it is usual to be stopped by police man to ask you:who are you?what you are doing here?
unless you are in a touristic group
