I enjoy a lot of classical music, and a lot of it bores me. Everyone has different tastes, but since you have to listen to it, you might as well try to make it an enjoyable experience. Get whatever you can out of it so you won't have to retake the class. If you can, I suggest that you listen to a wind quintet called Imani Winds. They have a unique approach to the classical genre, and I think you'll enjoy it.

There's good and bad in every musical genre. I happen to like classical for the most part but regardless, I think it's important for people to have an understanding of it, esp. if they are going to make a career out of music. There are a lot of "stolen" elements from classical music that are used in modern songs. Speak with your teacher and see if he or she can incorporate some examples into your lectures. It will make it much more interesting. The best film music has a classical edge to it. Maybe if you start looking at it from a different perspective, it'll be more interesting to you. Dig into it and listen for chord structure and instrumentation and try to figure out what it is about the individual parts that you don't like when put all together. While you're doing that, you're making the time go faster. Good luck:)

I took a musical appreciation class awhile back. I didn't think it "blowed" necessarily. It's certainly not my taste in music. But, I did appreciate (for lack of a better word) it because without that elementary stuff we would not have the popular genres you and I listen to so fervently today. What we enjoy and view as really good music now has been developed through the centuries and it started with that kind of stuff. The monks chanting and repeating themselves in a monosyllabic tone was the very beginning. Classical music came much, much later. But each genre influences the next, so while we may not like the music, we should give thanks that it was invented, for without it what we have now would never have been created.

Classical music is like any other genre of music. There's lots and lots of crap, and a handful of really good stuff.
It's like anything else - if you go into it with a closed mind you're just going to hate every minute of it.
Personally, though, I can't honestly say I listen to very much classical music. I have a few CDs of classical stuff laying around somewhere, but I'm rarely in the mood to listen to them. Although, I think your question just made me feel like getting back into it. There's a TON of stuff to explore there, and some of it is actually pretty damn good.

While you may think it's boring, classical music has been proven to make you smarter! Especially the music of Mozart. It's complexity enables you to retain knowledge better and to better comprehend when you study! The effects are short term, but short term effects are better than none. And by the way, popular music's repetitiveness makes you dumber. Weird, huh?

I like it, I often wonder if it was thought of as "Rock" at the time. there is not much guitar but there is some wicked drums
1812 Overture they actually fired cannons to get a bigger bang (plus it was about a war)
For those about to Rock we salute you lol!

Classical music is harder to listen to than "popular" music because you actually have to listen to understand it. You need to listen to everything that is going on in order to appreciate it. It's really not a type of msic that can be listened to without concentration if you want to enjoy it.
Maybe try going to an orchestra concert...Seeing it live will help you appreciate it more. When you can see what goes on, it will make more sense to you.

I think you almost have to play it to appreciate it.
Now what I truly HATE is opera music & singing. It sounds like badly injured animals squealing to me.
