Almost definately the document will go face down. In fact, I have yet to encounter a fax machine where it is placed face up. To do a test run, put the document in the fax machine, and hit the copy button if it has one. If the machine prints a copy, that is the way you will position the document to send a fax also.

Face down, top edge first.
I have the exact same model as you, but if you doubt me, try this little experiment; copy a document by using the same slot. It'll only work if it's face down. Repeat for sending a fax.
