This is a solution in search of a problem, they need to quick screwing with time (as if there aren't actual important things to do instead).

Hawaii and Arizona understand this.

Pick a time (earlier or later) and stick with it the entire year, we aren't living in caves, we have technology.

Besides it isn't the role of government to "help" any particular demographic whether farmers or retailers. But welcome to the Bipartisan States of Lobbydom.

And with it being light longer in the evening, people tend to go out and DRIVE (burning fossil fuels), so the energy notion is symbolic at best.

What I really dont understand is why later it will cost over $100 million to "study the effects" of this year's "experiment" ... sounds like a bunch of pork-barrel-esque hooey to me.

Probably not. It's more of a national defense reason. Any country totally dependent on a particular imported resource is susceptible to blackmail and is vulnerable in war time. An excellent example is western relations with Japan in the 1930s.

it's pretty simple. People that are farmers, helps save on energy bills, some places are opened later, and I don't know about you, but when it's late but it still looks day outside, I want to do more gardening and drinking. it's great.

I believe Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea to save fuel oil.The tradition has continued ever since.(And yes it still saves energy today)
