i never hear people say "them" or "they" about straight people? ITS THE SAME THING!!!

Because when you talk about 2 or more people, it is easier to say them or they.

It isn't ALWAYS used for gays.

When I say "They went out" I'm not saying 'The gays went out.'

It is used for any group of people.

People refer to any group as they or them. If you were talking about a group of men you would say, "they went to dinner" or "it didn't seem to affect them." Its the same with any group. "The children went to the park, they had fun .....etc"
