If you trust billion dollar corporations more than officials accountable to the public, you're a Republican.
If you think that letting the Earth go up in smoke in order to save a few bucks is a good trade off, you're a Republican.
If you think gays, atheists, non-christians, free-thinkers, and people who have abortions are evil, then you're a Republican.
If you think the poor people of America deserve to be poor because they are too immoral or lazy to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" then you are a Republican.
If you think that the people in the rest of the world are stupid and that they are not important, then you are a Republican.
If you think the Freedom to own an Uzi is more important than Freedom of Speech, you're a Republican.
Just a few examples.

the main substantial distinction between Republicans and Democrats are that Republicans have a extra strict interpretation of the form and Democrates have a extra loose interpretation of the form. additionally no that is not real that republicans in basic terms make the wealthy richer and supply help to those which could already help themselves yet republicans do attempt to reward people who labored not straightforward for what they have and that they are additionally for the middle type, if thats what you mean? Democrates are extra for taking from specific issues and giving to the damaging in a feeling yet that is going extra into unions. Regardless they are 2 distinctive political events with distinctive perspectives on rights: Republicans~ ~ professional-existence ~anti-gay marriage Democrates~ ~professional-selection ~professional-gay marriage they the two have extra perspectives purely look and stuff!

Despite the glib answers, there is some evidence that the main difference is whether you believe in strict parents or nurturing parents.
Because we evolved to live in small groups, we see national politics in terms of family values, with the government as the father, in the case of the right (Republicans), or the parents (in the case of Democrats).
The right want strict rules and harsh punishment to maintain order and to ensure the citizens- the children- learn the right values. They hate do-gooders bucking the system- people have to suffer the full consequences of their mistakes or, conversely, receive the full reward for their enterprise. So, low taxes and no social programs.
Democrats on the other hand see parenting as based on nurturing, with the child learning to make the right decisions through experience and reason and reflection. Outcomes are not necessarily proof of merit- a Republican sees wealth as evidence of righteousness and enterprise, the Democrat sees this as probably just good luck and superior opportunity early in life.
So they do not have so much respect for entitlement to wealth, and seek to create equal opportunities.
We all have both these value systems, and may even apply them differently to different issues. The party that best expresses how their policies articulate these values tends to win. This is also why values trump facts in policy.
Now I must at this point declare I am a left-winger, so to me the above explains why:
- nobody cares that Bush is a lying fool, because he appeals to our right-wing values.
- opposing abortion and opposing welfare go hand-in-hand, even though they don't appear to be related- it's about making sure people are 'punished' for not being 'good'.
- everything must be privatised- social ownership just bucks the system and the vigorous people must be allowed to own everything.
- wealth and power must be deferred to by the right- if you have money, you MUST deserve it or the whole logic of the system falls apart.

Seriously, the answer would be too long... You must be a republican because you spelled democrats wrong...
Democrats like to tax more than the republicans.. Republicans, in my opinion have a SLIGHT advantage (which isnt saying alot)in common sense...Nowadays, though, there is more politics in politics and I wonder if any of them are any good for the people....

Overall, in today's government, the difference is the same as that between spoiled, irresponsible, petty, spiteful, dangerous little children (democrats) and honorable, steadfast, upright and trustworthy adults (republicans). Of course there are exceptions on both sides, but that is what they are - exceptions.
