Trap #1: You can trap a ball by "absorbing" its energy as it comes to you with the inside of your foot, kind of like when you catch an egg. When someone throws you an egg, you bring your arm back as you catch it, thereby "absorbing" the force of the throw. Do the same as the soccer ball comes twoard you, but use your foot. Turn the foot you want to use to trap so the inside part is facing the ball, then bring your foot back as the ball comes twoard you. This will prevent it from bouncing off your foot/shinguards.
Trap#2: You can also trap a soccerball by lifting your foot and tilting it back at an angle (so your toes are pointing slightly up), so the ball comes to a stop. You're blocking the ball from continuing rolling with your heel.
These are for trapping a ball on the ground. See the links for more info/different ways of describing the traps.

when you trap the ball try cushioning it like your in an egg contest and your about to catch the egg. you don't stick out your hands (it will crack on you) you use a soft touch and slowly bring your hands back with it. its the same with soccer when the ball is coming at you try to cushion it don't stick your leg out or it will just bounce right off. also juggling can help a lot with your touch try to get out and practice a couple times a week and you will see a big improvement. as for the sprinting my soccer team does shuddles it helps with your quickness and your endurance. or just run the mile that will help too.

I think it's a combination of at least two of the other answers, first try not to think too much about it. Never take your eye off the ball. If you choose to use the inside of your foot then as the ball reaches you, move your foot backwards slightly with the ball to cushion it otherwise the ball will just bounce back.
The best way of all to learn though is by kicking a ball off of a wall and trapping it when it comes back, do that repeatedly and you should be fine, just work at your own pace, as you get better you should be able to trap the ball at greater speeds but start slow at first.
Soccer is like anything in life, it takes practice.
Good luck.

There are two basic ways in which to trap a soccer ball. You can simply stop it with the bottom of your cleat or shoe by stepping on top of it as it reaches you. However the most efficent way to trap a ball is a game is by using the inside of your foot. As the ball approaches your foot you adjust your foot in a position in which the inside of your foot is acing the ball. Next you let the ball hit your foot and wait for the ball to settle. This is the best way to trap a soccer ball because it puts you ina good position to release it quickly.

The first thing you must do is loosen up - thinking too hard about trapping the ball will cause you to tense up and make mistakes. Staying loose is absolutely essential in any sport; in terms of trapping a soccer ball, try to think of it as catching a filled water balloon. You want to break the speed of the ball by loosening up your feet. If you simply stick your foot out, the ball will likely bounce away from you. In short, get to know the ball by dribbling and moving it around.
Balance is also important. Like any sport, you must prepare to receive the ball by balancing yourself out. Otherwise, you will never be prepared to receive a pass.

well i think there are a variety of ways. but trapping to me is the ball stopped (or at least somewhat stopped) in front of you. there is to stop it with your kleat by stepping on it but you might want to do this at an angle. because if you do it straight down you might miss it. i know i have. XP
anyways....there is to stop it with the inside of your kleat which is more effective in some aspects.
but when the ball is coming from the air, you can do this thing called an elevator. its when you have your foot out and right when the ball is about to hit or barely touches it you bring your foot down like an elevator.
you can do this with your thigh too. and chest. have it come toward you then drop your chest and the ball should land at your feet.
hopefully the last to were explainable/made sense. i kinda have incoherent sentencing. sorry. XP

Be extremely gentle with the ball, and you can use any part of your body to bring the ball under control. Just be very gentle and calm with your touch and you can control any ball with practice.
