If the filter is frame mounted, its usually fairly easy. However, if the filter is part of the fuel sending unit, and mounted inside the fuel tank, it is quite a bit harder to do. If you are saying its expensive, I would guess that this is the case, and unless you have a good set of tools, a couple of jacks, good jackstands, and upwards of 6 hours of time to kill...not to mention, the need for the fuel tank straps in case the old ones are damaged or break during the work, hardware for the straps, and last but not least, the filter in question.... well, simply put, if the filter is in the tank, and you dont have a lot of hard experience, go ahead and let the shop do it.
Good luck.

Fuel filters are easier than oil filters. All you usually need is a screwdriver or plier to remove the hose clamps. Some of them bolt into place. A ten minute job on any car. For a fuel injected car, the filter can cost between $25-$50. For a carbureted car, it's cheap.

Sure you can :d go for it ... get yourself a manual for your car .. you will save yourself mega money by doing such things yourself.
they are a bit time consuming thus the high cost. not hard at all and the parts are not that much. if it is fuel injected you may have to know about that but with the manual and your experience from already doing the oil etc .. you will have No problems doing this.
I have always done my own services but you have to be aware of the new 'computer' cars and the things that can and can't be done as easily etc. can still be done though no probs.

If I remember right it takes some time to change the fuel filters, there are a number of them on cars now. Not just one as I had once thought. I think that is why it is time consuming.

depends on the vehicle. most vehicles have an inline filter located under the car. some vehicles have another filter located close to the engine. Changing a fuel filter isn't any harder than changing your oil. My advice is to buy a repair manual for your car/truck. autozone and o'reilly's carry them. or any auto parts store. It gives step by step instructions. Later

what kind of car do you have? some filters take as little as a screw driver and a few sockets to change. some you need special tools to unclip the lines from the filter. filters in the tank usually don't need service.

accordung to the car you have. if it is back on passenger side underneath by the frame, i would let someone else do it. it could turn out to be a problem with the experience you seem to be telling me. if it is up front, and i dont think it is, you could. my guess is, leave it to a mechanic.
