Although it is a crime, it is not legally considered a hate crime.
A hate crime is a physical crime such as murder or assault that is committed against a usually unknown victim due to a characteristic or perceived characteristic of the victim.
When Benjamin Nathaniel Smith, a member of a white supremacist organization, went on a shooting spree and targeted Orthodox Jews, Asians, and African Americans it was considered a hate crime since these individuals were targeted based on their race and/or ethnicity and the victims were not personally known to him.

And if a man beats up his wife, is that a heterosexual hate crime? After all, if neither of them had been heterosexual the crime wouldn't have been committed.

No it's the same as a man who beats his wife or a woman who bashes her husband. It's called domestic violence and is a crime.

"If neither of them was gay the crime wouldn't have been committed"???
You really got ahold of some bad green beer on St. Patrick's Day if you believe that only gays commit crimes.
