If you like your job, you could consider doing what my friend did. He quit his job and set up a business doing... his job! He hired himself back out to his ex-employer at a higher rate. The employer was happy because he knew he was good at the job and there was no longer sickpay/holidays etc. to worry about. My friend was happy because he was making more money and could choose who he wanted to have as clients.

It sounds like you have specialist knowledge so this could be ideal? If you don't fancy doing the work yourself, get others to do the work and act as a project manager?

If you visit the IRS website (www.irs.gov) you will find a 20-question test designed to determine if an individual meets the definition of an independent contractor. You must be able to pass the 20-factor test. including having the ability to provide your own insurance, working independently, having a tax ID or social security # so that you can receive a 1099 from your clients at year-end, etc.

Good luck.
